Bad Cat Converter?

Bad Cat Converter? How do you know if your Cat is bad? My car has been sounding kinda funny and the exhaust has a strong smell to. It also smokes a little some times. If I take it too a dealer what are they gonna do? I know emmissions warranties are a lot different than other becasue they can get there *** slammed if they dont keep the emissions down. Are they gonna do some test? How do I know if its bad or not if they say its fine? Thanks

I'm havin the same problem, obvious rattle w/ the cut out open. I actually thought it was an exhaust rattle at first but couldn't find out where it was hitting plus the rattle was quieter when I capped the cutout. I've heard that the easiest way to tell is to bang on the cat a couple of times to see if it rattles. It definately rattles. Mine's under extended warranty I just don't have time this week to bring it down. How many miles on your car? mine's got about 60K. Also, anyone know if I should be concerned about something coming loose in the cat and takin out my muffler?
