Default Running Hot....need help

Ok guys, 02' Z28 H/C car. Never had a problem before.

Car was leaking oil from the front cover. I pulled everything to repair the leak. Got it back together, poured antifreeze in the radiator until I could see it. Cranked the car up and let it idle. Fluid level in radiator never really dropped, I went around and saw the check gauges light on and cars sitting on 230-240 so I shut it off.

I've never worked on one of these cars before and didn't notice the coolant bottle, checked and it was dry. Put fluid in it and cranked car back up, now on 210 but car doesn't want to idle right.

Did I screw something up, should I just let it cool off then try it again or what.

TIA

take the upper radiator hose off at the end where it goes into the radiator and pour coolant in there so that it will fill the block up. Probably have a big air pocket seeing as you had to take the water pump off to take the front cover off.

Will it help to take the "steam pipe" hose loose and fill till it starts to run out of there?

would just be easier when the engine is cool to take that hose off and pour coolant in until its full. then just make sure your overflow is good, and crank it up

Top it off, leave the radiator cap off.......as the engine is warming up, rapidly squeeze the upper and lower radiator hoses like 30 times each. Might have to go back to them a couple times each......this moves the air bubble past the t-stat. Works every time.
