When my drivers side cat went on me, I did an O/R Y that bolts to the stock manifolds. I can't stress or preach enough on how big of a mistake that was. If I were in your spot I would deal with the bad cat for a little while until I could do headers.

"High-flow" cats are the exact same thing as stock cats in a different shape; they don't flow any better or give any power gains over stock cats. If you go with LTs and don't want duals, you can get catted y-pipes from some of the vendors. If you want to keep the stock manifolds for now, you'll either have to troll the FS section and ebay for a used stock cat, or ditch the stock y-pipe and cats, and get a catted y designed to mate to the stock manifolds.
Your best bet, money-wise, is just to find a used stock cat and replace the bad one you have; your best bet, money- and performance-wise, is to get a set of long tubes and a catted y-pipe.

You can put 2 of them, one on each side on the y pipe right after the header.
Or 1 cat after the pipes join.
Either way will work but the 2 cats will probably flow better, but not enough to make a noticeable difference. If you're on a budget then the 1 will work just fine.
Be sure to pick up the wire guides and some good header bolts too.

what year is the car? i believe it was 2002 that had a tsb on it that allowed the cat warranty to go up to 100,000 miles instead of 80,000 as long as it is throwing a 420 code.
