1998 SS: Bypass Security Light?
So my 1998 SS I just bought, the Security light is constant but it starts fine. It is a slight bit annoying so how do I disable it. I heard grounding a BCM wire does this, which wire color/pin is it for my 1998 SS? I attempted to search but didn't find anything exact.
Thanks,
Mike

This is the only key I have, really don't want to buy another key if possible. I would rather just disable it complete if I could. I think this may also be triggering my alarm but I could be wrong.

I had the same problem with my 99 regal gs, light was always on and the car would not start on occasion. I replaced the resister that was installed for the aftermarket remote start and havent had the light or start issues since.
It was just a bad connection with their crappy install.
You most likely have some unwanted resistance some where along the path that isnt quite matching the key causing the light. It should be within 10%

So did the light go off then? If it's not the resistor in the key, you might need to replace the ignition lock cylinder. There are two small wires from the lock cylinder going into the steering column, and with the constant turning on/off the key to start and stop the car, these wires can break after a while because they flex every time the ignition is turned on or off. My security light came on and I took a chance at replacing the lock cylinder myself because I suspected this to be the reason, and it was--one wire had broken. It's a common problem, and if you have still been able to start the car, I would guess this is probably the issue.

Yes can start the car, just hoping for a quicker fix than this. I dont really want to replace the lock cylinder because I dont want a generic key and I dont think GM units are that cheap. If theres a way to just turn it off Id much rather do that, if not Ill just deal with it.

Not too bad of a price to do it right, and I think the lock cylinder only cost me about $25 or so. It didn't take too long to do the job--a couple hours and I was taking my time and replacing some other parts while I was in there. You can run it like it is, but eventually the other wire will break and then you won't be able to start your car.

I assume I could go with this newer style key cylinder as well but would still need to disable the vats light http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevy-GMC-Ig...f2ff9b&vxp=mtr

Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. You shouldn't have to worry about disabling VATS. The place I got my lock cylinder from (my local auto parts store) sold me a Standard Ignition brand lock cylinder with two dummy keys. I installed the lock cylinder, bought the correct resistor GM key and took it with the dummy keys to get it cut. The GM key worked perfectly after it was cut, and the light was off afterwards. VATS should still work. The key you get with the lock cylinder isn't supposed to be able to turn the car on, it's just supposed to give you a pattern to have the correct VATS code key copied.

Its easy, just look up the guide to doing this yourself, you unplug 1 plug under the dash, test the resistance on your key, buy resisters and wire them together to get the correct resistance, then put them in one side of the plug and voila (look the guide up due to this being general) All in all it takes maybe 30 minutes if you're doing it with 1 arm and your eyes closed.

I have a resistance chart for all the gm passkeys which will give you the resistance range for all the keys. I will dig it out an upload later. This will give you an idea on what resistors to buy to bypass the passkey system. There is an orange wire with two little white wires coming out of it cut it and add you resistor on the computer side of the harness. Oh and you should solder these connections to prevent bad connections.
