Default Starter help

I finally got my engine finished on the stand and wanted to fire it before I put it in my truck. I tapped into my fuel line on my truck and then wired the MSD to my battery. As I tried to start it, the starter spins but will not fully engage to the flex plate. I removed it and jumped it and all it will do is spin and not pop out to engage the flex plate. The gear is not stuck as I can move it freely with a flat head screw driver. Is there any tricks I can do to get it to work or am I SOL and have to get another starter? By the way, I did not hook anything up to the lead wire. I was told all I had to do was ground out the starter and bridge the two big threads to get it to spin. I was told the lead (small one) was not needed to get it to activate while on an engine stand.

sounds like you r hooking up the starter wrong cause the solenoid isn't engaging

hook up 12 volts to the battery feed terminal. then jump that with a screw driver to the s-terminal and it should fire right up.. i think the small one your taking about is the s-terminal

I finally found a video giving a great demonstration on how to test a starter. I didn't mention that before I hooked up my starter I had a guy at the auto parts store show me how to wire it, needless to say he said the little lead wire did not need to be hooked up to test the solenoid
So after i couldn't get it to engage, I brought it to said bumb *** who ran it on the tester and said the solenoid was bad! HE NEVER HOOKED UP THE LEAD WIRE! I'm so annoyed now, I spent all that time setting up and wiring my MSD to my truck and unhooking my fuel lines on my truck to tap into the new engine on the stand. All this and if I would have asked someone who knew what they were talking about, I would be posting a video of my engine running!
I just tested my starter the way the guy in the video showed and it works perfect! I will try to start her again on monday when I am home. At least I don't need a new starter!

I just got it running on the stand, sounds awesome. I am having trouble uploading it on photobucket. I will post the video tonight when I get it figured out.
