sealing collectors

Default sealing collectors

slip on hi-flow merge collectors started leaking this week. How can i re seal them, When i put them together i lathered both the inside and outside with hi-temp copper silicone. I dont think i'm getting them apart to do that again. This was about two years ago. I remember seeing dynatech had some type of epoxy sealant? This ticking is getting annoying.

When I used to do R&R work at a transmission shop, I'd typically pull 4-5 FWD transmissions per week. The exhaust would have to come off, and in almost every case the gasket was shot due to higher mileage. The shop I worked at didn't believe in replacing gaskets for some reason, so we used red RTV on the flanges. In the time I was there I never saw one single car come back because of an exhaust leak.

yeah but my flanges are not leaking cause i dont have any, i have slip on collectors. ALso the collectors "slip" onto the primaries. Its leaking where the primaries go into the collector. its extreamly tight, i had to use a peice of emory paper to get everything smooth enough to fit int cause each primary has an exact hole in the collector, not pinched on and welded like the others. I sealed them with red rtv and squeezed them together, it was a bitch getting them apart when i dry fit them, now they have rtv in ther.

I was having this problem on my car also. I was getting exhaust leaks at lamost all of my slip joints. I bought a 3" u-bolt exhaust clamp from Pepboys and used it to crimp the slip joints. Then I reinstalled the stepped bandclamps that I got with my Kooks. It worked like a charm, no more leaks.

I also but some anit-sieze between the y and the collectors in an attempt to make it easier to take apart when clutch time comes around.

Good luck, I know how frustrating exhaust leaks are.
