Alot of people that have them including myself run them open the majority of the time. The only downside is at full throttle if you get headers and a ory, it will be really loud

Unless you have a 10 second car, practice on flipping the QTec switch after your 60'...

Cutouts are an excellent way of freeing up your exhaust.
They do however, sound horrible at part throttle.
But they sound wicked at WOT.

Your torque peak will move higher in the rev range, so your car will feel "slower", but there will be peak hp gained also. It's a proven mod.
Don't worry about heat. As long sa there's nothing aimed at any fuel lines, all is well.

Take a look at www.streetpro.us. The site has complete instructions and lots of great photos of installations. There is no problem from heat with the Street Pro Street / Strip --The unit is Jet Hot Ceramic coated so the external temp of the cutout is about half the temp of the factory exhaust pipe. It's avery easy install on any F-Body

Talking Qtp

I got my cut-out from QTP. Me and my dad both bought our cutout from them. We both leave ours open most of the time. Try QTP though they got to me in like a day. The guys also helped me out quite a bit

I just put in a DMH electic cutout a couple days ago and I LOVE it!!! I love how it's loud at half-full throttle and at idle it's actually pretty quiet. I have magnaflow right now and the cutout is under the passenger rear seat. What's even better is that it only cost $25 to install...can't beat that! I can't wait to get LT's and an ORY to really increase the intimidation factor!
