Default Ported Stock TB

OK, so I've been reading how porting a stock LS1 TB will add gbs of torque, boatloads of HP, and will dramatically improve throttle response pretty much everywhere.

But I don't read much about changes to the MAF? Seems like a bad idea to remove the screen. But what about porting it? Making a bigger one? Changes?

Seems like improving air flow down stream of a restriction isn't going to help much.

Porting the TB will add maybe 5 hp at best, and don't mess with the MAF IMO.

The maf is delicate and you have a better chance of hurting it than helping IMO. You would also likely need to have the tune touched up slightly if you mess with it.

The TB porting will mostly add throttle response. It's worth doing if you are skilled with a dremel or can get it done cheap but I wouldn't pay what a lot of people here do for the work.

I just threw on my ported ls1 TB with my SLP lid last weekend with a screened MAF. Didn't feel much of a gain if any. Not that noticeable. yesterday I threw the volant back on with a descreened MAF, and noticed a little better throttle response. Not much else. IMO, save your time and money and go with a larger TB with a properly ported FAST intake if you want to improve air flow.

OK, that sounds pretty reasonable. Thanx for saving me some money.

I'll give the TB a close look over, and smooth out any particularly rough areas or transitions. Otherwise I'll just leave it and the MAF alone.

Don't mess with the MAF. you are asking for trouble. port the TB and if you want a larger MAF go with the gm 85mm maf.

Id leave your maf alone...I def. noticed a throttle response difference after the ported tb...think a few shops have dyno'd back to back and it'll gain you around 5-7 hp.

Ported TB gains very little power; it mostly just changes the relationship between pedal angle and airflow so you get more airflow at small throttle openings... touchier response. Whether that's better or not is a matter of opinion. It does liven up an auto, but makes a manual too touchy IMO.

Unless the area around the blade is ported and a larger blade is installed there should not be huge changes in CFM flow.

A properly ported TB will smooth and enlarge the bell in front of the blade. This should help velocity by funneling more air through the blade area. They also typically half the blade shaft which might allow a minuscule amount more airflow.
