I managed to melt my gas tank a little bit as well 
Now I've got thermal tape and stock heat shields on but they rattle like a bitch.
Not trying to hijack this thread but should I consider replacing my gas tank...? Not really melted that bad but the peace of mind might be worth it. If I decide to replace it, is there a smaller tank I could buy that would give more clearance?

Lavashield is sold in sheets. It's carbon fiber with lava rock weaved into it. It'll withstand 1400F within 1 inch of it. So I just covered the passenger side of the tank and the front half of the tank to protect it.

It's covered in tape right now but I'll probably do what Jake did and buy lava shield. When I peel the old off I'll take some pictures.
