Default starter bendix question.

I know that the starter bendix on our cars engages magneticlly, but what makes the starter gear disengage from our flywheels? Is that also magnetic?

The reason I ask, my engine is new and I haven't ran it yet. I have only spun it over with the starter to prime the oil system. And when I looked under the car, the starter gear was still engaged with the flywheel, is that something I should be worried about?

There's a spring that pulls it back. If it's stuck, you may need some shims to push the starter gear further away from the ring gear.
