Default Water temp sending unit

Howdy, been a while since I posted but haven't had any problems even after 27,000 miles since built. Anyway, my temp gauge isn't working. It's an after market gauge classic instruments. I understand there are 2 sensors; 1 for the computer and 1 for the gauge. So I go to all my local auto parts stores and they can't find the unit. Its a 2002 LS1 out of a Camaro. It is the unit toward the back of the engine by cyl #8 on the passenger side. Anyone know how to get a part #? Am I seeking the right part? Thanks!

They're usually gauge specific. You'll have to get a new sender from Classic Instruments. Summit Racing sells them.

Also, that's probably not the best place for a temp gauge. Ideally, you want it near the other end of the head. Water will pick up a lot of heat from one end of the head to the other. I would drill and tap a hole in the thermostat housing part of the water pump, in that flat spot on top.

From 1999 forward, the factory temperature gauge in the instrument cluster got it's reading through the PCM. There is only one coolant temperature sensor.

Your aftermarket mechanical gauge would have it's own sending unit. While the rear on the passenger side is not a great place for it, the one for the PCM is more important as it affects how the PCM runs the engine. It should be in the left head.

boB great call. Absolutely on target. Of course it is from Classic as I stand over the empty box all the gauges came in. Wow, 'my bad' and 'no duh.'

Thanks to you and Paul. When the gauge was working my engine ran 185-195. I plugged in my OBDII blue tooth and pulled up the temp on my phone. Also 185-195, so I feel okay about the sensors location.

Thanks again guys!!!
