Why not leave the stock cat back, add a cut out and call it a day?

It's not about what it looks like though, it's about how well it flows. A Flowmaster 80 series looks nice inside and is generally regarded as a performance killer, flows worse than stock.

I'm not a fan of the FM 80, but worse than a stock Z28/SS gm muffler; I really doubt it.

That's the set-up I've been running for years, but the stock muffler is very restrictive ( almost 20 hp diff with the cut-out open ). Going to put a better catback on soon though.

That's pretty well the same setup I have...although I'm running Edelbrock 1 3/4"- 1 7/8" stepped headers, custom ORY with flowmaster dual 3" in/ 4" out merge, 4" section of pipe to the 4" cutout, then neck down to 3" for the stock SLP Dual/Dual setup.
