intake backfire

intake backfire so, i tried to start my car and it cranked a few times and sounded like it was going to catch so i let go of the key, it almost started but then it stalled and i heard a very loud backfire through the intake. I popped the hood and noticed that the backfire blew the cap off the front of the intake and dented my hood. Im going to upgrade to an ls6 intake and replace the hood with a cf hood but i dont want it to happen again. what would cause a backfire like that? its an ls1 with an ls1 intake and a mild cam. it runs and drives just fine. could it be in the tune, an intake leak, leaking injectors, or maybe a bad crank sensor? any input would help, thanks
If this was an old-school small block, I'd say you got the spark wires crossed and had the firing order wrong. Since that is difficult to impossible to do on a LS...
You say "it runs and drives fine". So, did anything happen between shutting it off and starting it back up? For example, is this your first fire up after the cam upgrade? The computer uses both the cam and crank position sensors to know where it is in the engine cycle. Did you recently do any work to anything affecting engine timing?

nope its been running fine for months. it sat for about a week and i turned the key in the on position to let the fuel pump prime. cranked it, hear it catch and let off the key. it putted, shook,stalled and then backfired. i temporarily fixed the intake with a rubber plug and it runs just as it did before. I just dont want it to do it again once i put the ls6 intake and a new hood on.
