Default fuel pump failure?

picked up the (new to me) ws6 ive been looking at for awhile, 98' Ws6 A4 with 48k original miles, all stock including the ever so wonderful EGR. drove her home today and as soon as i parked it i noticed an odd whining noise from the rear, car was in park at the time. definitely louder on the driver side rear, even pop the gas lid and its louder in there and from underneath in the rear wheel well. sounds like one of those older remote control cars motors. My first assumption is the factory fuel pump. The car drives fine but i believe the pumps on it s way out.

So am i correct in my diagnosis or should i be looking elsewhere? and how difficult will this be.
