Default Drone

Just did a new exhaust and love it. I expected it to be louder but the drone is crazy at certain rpms. I am running a 4in diameter 12in long dynomax bullet. Would removing this bullet reduce the drone?

In my experience dumped type setups always seem to drone worse. So you have Kooks long tubes and the Kooks ORY I'm assuming?

Haha, I have the exact same set-up on my son's "strip only" car and it is LOUD and obnoxious at all rpms (but the ultimate in free flowing IMHO). You're gonna have to run it out the back to cure any of those symptoms.

You could try rotating the turndown so it faces more out the side of the car instead of towards the ground under the rear end, but that more than likely wont take the drone out completely. Put a cutout right after the bullet muffler then run an over the axle pipe to something out the back, maybe even another muffler in the stock location to tame it down a bit for longer drives then uncap the cutout when you want it to be loud. Removing the bullet all together will make it sound terrible IMO. LS motors with straight pipe sound like crap to me, with the exception of a few corvettes.

If the exhaust is not run all the way back the sound can';t get out from underneath the car and the resonance of that sound bouncing off everything under the car is what causes the drone.
Finish the exhaust out the back of the car or possibly get it to exit out the side of the car before the axle.

The 4" exhaust i had on my SSS was the same way until i took it over the axle and out the back. I had it dumped under the cab and was running two borla XR1s back to back and it droned like crazy at certain rpms. After I extended the pipe over the axle and dumped it under the bed and pointing out from under the truck it took out about 90-95% of the drone. The muffler wont have near the effect on drone that routing the pipe out from underneath the car will. I plan to do a similar setup on my fbody after I get the new motor in and im definitely going to route it over the axle and dump it back by the bumper.

might check with either Hawks or Mufflex. They both make a 4" catback and might sell just the over axle pipe. Cant hurt to ask anyway. If not, just take a look at whats included with their catback and buy some mandrel bends from summit or jegs. Surely the guy who did the rest of your exhaust can cut/weld and fab up an over axle pipe out of some straight and mandrel bends.

I don't know if this will help you. The cure for drone-- 1/4 resonance pipes aka J-pipes aka Helmholtz tubes

I just spoke with Ryan @ Hawks (yes yes, i know...theyre shady and a lot of people dont like them) but I also emailed mufflex and they have yet to get back with me. Anyway...Ryan said that they would be willing to sell just the 4" over the axle pipe from their sinister exhaust kit. So if anyone else has a 4" exhaust dumped under their car and wants to get it routed out the back to get rid of some interior noise let me know and Ill see if theyre willing to do a discounted rate for multiple pipes. I know they arent a sponsor here so if this will create any problems please just PM me with your interest instead of posting here. It will be about 2 weeks before they have them ready to ship.
