Default '99 Z28 - Intake Hose Question

The car is a 1999 Z28 M6 w/ 325K miles. I'd like to know what the port in the photograph is for .... I've disconnected the hose and put a red cap on it.

The hose connects this port to the front of the passenger side valve cover, and it is separate from the PCV connection from the valve cover to the intake. When I look into the throttle body, I see a yellow goo dripping into the throttle body and it is coming from this port. I'm curious as to the function of this hose and port. Can I cap the port as shown and just let the hose open to the atmosphere?

Thanks

Think about the oil that is in the intake manifold, if you disconnect that hose on the valve cover and just leave it open your engine bay might be a little dirty after 1 drive.
