Default NEW?? Balancer Bolt

I get that the Balancer bolt is torqued to 250ftlb and that there is a material on them to help keep them from backing out. And that the Balancer system only works to dissipate vibrations if it is solidly mounted to the crankshaft.

Why does all of the documentation state to use a NEW Bolt when re-installing?

Is it really necessary?

That's One Big Ole Bolt!

I believe its a TTY bolt and can only be used 1 time..

however the ARP balancer bolt can be used multiple times

The original bolt is stretched when it's installed. If you reuse it and try to stretch it again - it may break! Nothing wrong with an OEM bolt, they're cheap and reliable when installed correctly. ARP bolts are only an advantage for those that race and do a lot of tear downs on the engine. They are too expensive for a one time installer. Head bolts are the same - Torque to yeild and can't (shouldn't) be reused. Using new bolts for balancers and head bolts hasn't changed in over 50 years. It's just new to some of us!

Welcome to LS1tech!

Yes, GM head, main and crank bolts are torque to yield and cannot be used more than once.

do not use an old bolt to pull the balancer on either. either get some threaded rod or a tool made for balancer install

Do not use ANY bolt to pull on the damper. Get an installer.
