Default Header gasket question...

I installed Hooker headers and used the GM steel gaskets. I have a leak at cylinder 8. I'm going to try to tighten the bolt and see if that corrects the issue. My question is whether the Fel Pro header gaskets are better at sealing than the steel GM gaskets(if tightening the bolt doesn't solve the issue)?

Bit of advice my friend gave me- don't tighten too much. It's easy to overtighten one bolt then it starts warping the header flange a bit and makes it worse (pressure is uneven across the flange). If you are going to tighten, maybe tighten all of them? Perhaps someone with more experience can chime in.

In that instance it may be better to use a stud so you arent pulling threads.
The felpro gaskets are trash honestly. The gm mls are the best for nearly every application. Once they are crushed you cant really reuse them tho. And if tightening it back doesnt work then youll prob need a new gasket with some lock tite on the threads or studs

Do you currently offer the a.c. Delco exhaust manifold gaskets. Link it in and I'll buy it

Ordered

I also need to know why you list 1998 water pump gaskets as specific to 1998 vehicles. It's bugging the crap out of me as there is no specific gm 1998 water pump listed

The orig 98 pumps were taller so the paper gasket was there. 99 and up they switched pumps amd to metal gaskets. if you are using a new water pump youll use the metal gaskets as they are all made the same now.

Thanks again. In searching it appears 98 was the only year to use a paper gasket, but newer gaskets are also compatible with a 98 pump

You can use the metal o ringed gaskets only if it won't cause an alingment issue. ive seen issues when trying to run supercharger brackets and the newer gaskets had to switch back or grind the brackets. otherwise its not an issue though.

Anti-seize on the threads. You'll be asking for problems with loctite on header bolts.

Ive never had an issue. And ive installed quite a few. I never apply anti seize to anything. Yes ot normally comes on new O2 sensors, but thats all I've ever installed with it on threads. If i am putting a sensor back in, i wont purposely put it on the threads. Ive seen way too many issues with it to recommend to anyone.

Seems like my whole passengers side comes loose one bolt at a time, I can't feel a leak of air, but I feel heat escaping so I know the gasket is shot.

I plan to use a coating of copper gasket spray

There is no reason to use that on am exhaust gasket. check the flange straightness and flatness. then make sur to clean the head surface very well. usually a scotch brite and oven cleaner or the like.

The problem people have with anti-seize is that they glob the **** on. Much like loctite, a little dab goes a long way. On areas that see temperature swings with dissimilar metals or areas that are exposed to the elements, I apply anti-seize. On the engine in particular, O2 sensors, header studs, blind water pump bolts, and spark plugs get a dab.

had same problem so i trashed the gaskets and used copper rtv and all good now. Plus you don't have to worry about gasket matching if you have larger ports and headers.

The 12617944 are full round and fit 1 7/8 full round headers at least with no issue
