I would be VERY interested in seeing a before-and-after dyno test on this procedure.....

Just did this to my car. I am hoping to hit the track one or two more times this year and see if there is any major difference. I also removed the EGR tube in the front of the intake, ported the throttle body and did the free ram air mod. SO considering the air will get better this fall and all of the changes made at once it would be impossible to quantify any results. Regardless, SOTP feels noticeably better.

i wonder if anyone ever thought about cutting out the areas on the screen but only leaving the section/area in front of the maf sensor/diode to ensure smooth air stream is hitting it?

The screen is there to direct air flow over the hotwire in a more consistent/uniform stream. Some people report tuning nightmares after removing the screen. Some say they get around it.

Edit: just realized this isn't a serious thread. Facepalm

z06 maf is of similar construction and uses no screen. All new card style mags don't have a screen either. As long as the tuner is decent it's not needed
