Default 2001 LS1 Camaro SS barn find

All,

Picking up an 2001 Camaro SS LS1 barn find tomorrow with 300 documented miles. Car has been driven 2 times max a year. Cranked/idled/revved monthly or so. All original except battery. Putting brand new tires tomorrow because the other ones are 18 years old. Going to save original ones in garage for originality though.

No leaks on car anywhere, spotless. All seals look great. First thing I'm going to do of course is change the oil and filter. What other areas do you think need changed due to age? Serpentine, Trans, Rear end fluid, Coolant, Power Steering, Brake fluid, Spark Plugs, etc?

Looking for thoughts.

Thanks all. Will post pictures once safe in my garage.

I would change all mentioned just so that you know what you have versus leaving 18 year old materials in the car.

Figured after Oil I'd move on to Serpentine, Rear End, then Coolant. Plan to go with AMSOIL as all my other machines.

Dren, sounds like a fantastic find. Congratulations

Other items to consider:

1. What's the life of an intake manifold gasket o-ring?

At 18 years the ones on my 99 TA looked pretty bad. They were compressed and less flexible. It wasn't leaking yet but I think a problem was developing. My car did have a fair amount of miles and some exposure to rain.

2. Change and flush power steering fluid.

3. Carefully inspect all rubber hoses, radiator, heater & PCV

4. I'd do new plugs & wires. Call me paranoid.

Did plug in my 99 TA at ~4,000 miles -- 6 of plugs were gapped wrong per the old .060 spec. Some were .054, some were at .062 or .065 I forget now.

I wouldn't worry about the rear end fluid. Mine is 20 years old and never been changed.

Blackbird,
Thanks. Will do all in a short amount of time. Car is perfect but yes I'll nitpick to make safe and road worthy.

After changing tires, oil, serpentine, and inspection.. Safe to spin it up with less than 500 miles?

Dren,

There are probably a lot of folks that will disagree with me on this. Fresh oil change with conventional Valvoline drive a few hundred miles then another oil change. I'd vary the rpm between 2,000 and 4,000 a good bit for a while since the car hasn't been driven a frequently. Maybe even cut the oil filter to make sure all looks good. This will give a chance to fully evaluate the car first and fully check out.

Then I'd spin the engine like any other LS

Definitely want too see pictures!

Engine sensors going bad will be next on the list. Oxygen sensors 1st. Knock sensors under manifold likely 2nd. Oil sending units at back of manifold tend to start leaking at some point. Items like starter could die like a light bulb randomly even with low miles.
Of course if it runs great, wait on any of that stuff, just keep it in mind so you won't be surprised.
Get a tube of silicone grease & wipe on all you weatherstrips after initial cleaning.

I’d change the fuel filter as well.
good point on lubing the weather stripping. GM makes a product called emulsifier for those parts.
And get us some dang pics!

If it has not been mentioned may be worth swapping battery. Tires may be dry rotted also. Verify all your harness grounds. Visual and hand tight check is fine.

On it. Thanks. Brand new tires installed today. Newer battery installed by previous owner too.
