Default Truck Alternator Problem

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out this alternator problem. I've tried 3 alternators (2 brand new internally regulated DR44G's and the original DR44G that came with my engine). I cannot get it to charge my battery no matter what. What's more odd is, if I measure the voltage from the alternator case to the positive lead, I only get 11.8-12v. All 3 alternators show the same values. Same thing I get on the battery terminals (battery is an optima yellow top).

My initial thought is an inadequate ground, possibly due to the LSS alternator bracket having rubber bushings that bolt to the head. So I put a ground strap from the head directly to the frame, make sure it was clean and solid. Didn't make a lick of difference.

The next thing I'm going to try is running a 2 gauge wire directly to the battery.. but I doubt it will fix anything. I'm hoping someone here has ran into a similar issue and is able to provide some input, I'd appreciate any help at this point. I put a diagram of my setup now for reference.

Yup...

The problem is right there on your diagram. "Plug not connected". The alt will NEVER do diddly without that. It'll just sit there and suck acoupla hundredths of a HP off the belt.

You were right. I have a red and white connector and my logic said red was 12v for the exciter. Then I read about people just running a lead to the dr44g and that was it. Come to find out the white wire was the 12v. Hooked it to my ignition and boom, 13.8v. Thanks for your help guys... I feel slightly dumber now

Live and learn, or ya don't live long. How did I ever make it this far?

Don't feel "dumb"; feel like you started out … ignorant, and you successfully learned a lesson.

Also make sure you have a body ground from the battery to body and engine to body
