Need help diagnosing noise I know, diagnosing noise over the internet is virtually impossible lol
I have a rattle vibration noise that sounds exactly like an exhaust pipe vibrating against the floor pan. That's always what I thought it was. Now that I'm tracking it the noise seems to be coming from the front of the motor. The best I can pinpoint is somewhere around the timing cover. Does this seem like a water pump on the way out? I figure to get that hollow vibration it would either be the water pump or the pulley since that's basically a big bell. I can't think of anything else that could make that type of sound.
Any experienced noise hearers can chime in with ideas.

If you have an engine stethoscope that would be useful but you could use a screwdriver or even a piece of hose to listen and see if you can pin point exactly where the noise is coming from.

I pulled the belt and the noise was gone. When I spin the water pump by hand there's a very faint squeak every 4th or 5th rotation. The alternator has a fairly loud squeak every 2 rotations. I'm guessing that they're both on the way out but it's probably the alternator making the noise I'm hearing. I'll bring it to autozone and see if it makes noise when they bench test it.
