Default Cam suggestions for LM7 with 862 heads

Thanks for reading my post. I have an old project I have been working for years with my son. He is now off to college and I have the itch to get this thing running. The project I have is a 1973 Camaro RS. I have been a part of the NastyZ site for years and have gained a bunch of knowledge from that group.

I picked up a a 2002 LM7 with 862 heads and a 4L60E trans. I plan to do the swap this spring. I have been accumulating the parts needed for the swap. So far, F- body oil pan, LS6 intake with rails and injectors, timing chain, oil pump, gasket kit etc. As with most I am trying to keep the budget in mind because these swaps snow ball quickly. I will be changing the rear end gears to at least a 3.42 or maybe even 3.73. I have a line on a Z06 cam but the more I read the more I think I would be much happier with the aftermarket offerings. I have read that Elgin 1840-p or the SummitStage 3 Truck: SUM-8713: .545/.545 - 222/231 112+5 cam may be a nice option. I am looking for good all around cam. Suggestions from those that have a similar setup as I have?

LM7s came with 862 heads. The issue with the Z06 cam is its very wide 117.5 LSA, and late IVC, both of which suck out a lot of low end power.

Exactly why I am looking at my options. The Z06 cam was free but if I am going to go through the effort and the motor is sitting on a stand might as well stab something in there that is worthwhile. Any suggestions?

How much power are you after, and how will it be used?

What converter? What life will it see? Vehicle weight? Any head work getting done? Compression ratio?

The car is 1973 Camaro RS/LT. She is a bit heavy at 3400Lbs. I assume the compression will be factory LM7 numbers. I don't have any power goals in mind. For conversation sake around 330HP+ is a good target. The car will never see the drag strip but would like to have get up and go. I have a 450RWHP 1986 Mustang to thrash if needed. I have not purchased the stall as I understand that I need to match the cam and the stall. The price of the Summit cams are pretty reasonable and fit my budget.

OK, with the cam you have in mind you might want to get the heads mildly ported, mainly a bowl blend and multiangle valve job. Use a good 2-1/2" dual exhaust and a decent CAI.

I currently running the Pypes SS exhaust with x-pipe. I plan to use that with this swap. I am going to give Summit a call and get some suggestions from them on a cam. i will let you know what they recommend for my application.

I really like the new Summit cams. They won't steer you wrong.

Trying to avoid head work if possible. At some point when the motor needs to be rebuilt I may look into some new heads that flow better. For now I am going to swap the cam, intake, TB, electric fan, and a torque converter.

Summit stage 1 or stage 2 would probably be good. I don't think I'd go bigger on a 5.3.
