High pitched whine while in gear
2000 T/A 6-speed. When driving, there is a high pitched whine under acceleration and de-acceleration. The whine stops when taking the car out of gear. The whine isn't loud enough to hear over the exhaust when trying to record it, but it's driving me nuts.
Any ideas where to start or how to better get a sense of where the noise is coming from? Does this sound transmission related since it stops when you take the car out of gear?

If it's the transmission, generally it will change according to what gear it's in. Especially, 4th vs all other gears.
If it's the rear end, it'll be the same no matter what gear.
Taking the car out of gear, pushing in the clutch, and feathering the gas to where the engine neither pushes the car nor pulls it, should all have the same effect. Doesn't really indicate a particular part if it happens.
