Default Best Exhaust Mufflers

I have a procharged set up on a 2001 ls1 trans am with a 6 speed. Next year I'll be running a smaller pulley to increase the power. I'm thinking about American Racing headers, but I'm still researching headers. Most important factors to me are finding headers that 1.) will last a long time, 2.) fit well, 3.) Power gain up top without sacrificing too much low end/ mid range power. If I can manage to not sacrifice any low end, even better. I also need to replace the current cat back system.

I currently have a spin tech muffler. It's just a little bit too "aggressive" for my aging ears. I'd like a "deep and mellow" exhaust note. I really don't mind an exhaust that is a little bit on the loud side, but I want to as little drone and rasp as possible. I was possible thinking about a set up like the borla cat back where I can possibly install a boost actuated exhaust valve on one side to bypass the muffler, but I don't think I'd enjoy the borla sound.

Wink Dynomax Performance

Hello,
When I put on Thorley mid-length headers I used the gas pack straight threw muffler that came with the headers. It had a bad drone so I put in a resonator in the center pipe which did nothing. I put the stock muffler back and ran that for years. Last year I replaced the stocker with Dynomax Performance -super turbo oval. It is louder than stock but with no drone.
It is one that David Vizard said he had a hand in developing. Summit part number WLK-17792, 3" pipe diameter. I first got a longer "Dodge" one but that had a flat inside with a extra chamber that did not have the smooth curved exhaust routing.
Going from 2.75" pipe dia. to 3.0" dia." is good.
Hope that helps

Thank you so much! That's helpful. How much louder would you say if you can give me a rough idea?

TSP headers are 16 gauge and have velocity spike, best deal on performance headers.

With money saved from going TSPs instead of ARs, I would go with a 4 inch Mufflex exhaust, and a Magnaflow Muffler.

This would be most efficient and sound good but not obnoxious.

Well my wife says she can hear the truck a couple blocks away when I drive home.
I can not hear any noise when I am off the throttle. There is a low level when on the throttle but nothing too loud.

I used a Flowmaster 70 3" , normally I don't like the Flowmaster Tone but this thing does pull it down to a growl, on the freeway Its fine , but I drive a 94 Wrangler so I'm used to sitting in a bucket while someone hits it with a hammer.. LOL

that is the quotes muffler you will likely find. Flows 700 cfm so if you have 2 thats 1400 and your total flow required for a lossless system is around 2.2 cfm per hp divided by 2 for each bank. Spintechs are crazy loud. I have the 9000s with a dumped exhaust and it's pretty insane but suits the purpose. Those dynomax super turbo mufflers would be my choice for an engine making under 700 hp. I wouldn't probably run them with nitrous or boost. If you doing I'd get the biggest straight through I could find and fit instead.

The dynomax sounds like the sound I want. It might be too stupid and convoluted, but I was thinking that maybe having an exhaust cut out opened by a boost actuator. I really don't mind how loud that thing is under 75% throttle.

No idea. I bought the car back in 2003 or 2004 and the previous owner put it on. All I can tell you is that it's a spintech and it's a square style muffler.

I think Borla employs Heimholz sound cancellation science in their mufflers, to good effect!

My experience with a couple sets of spin techs is they are reasonable on the low end sound wise, but most of them have a sweet spot where they suddenly get louder at the upper upper RPM ranges, they also "Season" as they get some heat cycles on them. They are performance oriented, street is really their extra game.

Never had any real drone issues.. at least no worse than other performance mufflers.

Sorry to renew an old post. Anyone have any long term luck with Speed Engineering's Headers? I just saw that my friend pout them on his car. They fit and look nice in there. I'm only hesitant because I can't believe how much cheaper they are than anyone else.

I just installed their 1-3/4 headers last weekend. Fit and finish are good, only difference is they used seemed tubing. However it's nice a smooth, so I can't see that making a difference other than price.

Take a look at Magnaflow. I've run them on a few vehicles. Decent sound without being raspy from my experience.

I was thinking about going with their cat back system. Expensive, but looks quality built

I agree on Magnaflow but personally I wouldn't use their catback with those ugly cannon tips. They make 4th gen mufflers that will fit either stock or aftermarket pipes. They are reasonably quiet in normal driving, sound awesome at WOT, and flow great. No drone, no rasp, even with ORY.

What do you mean by cannon tips? I've found magnaflow cat back that has dual tips on each side that look pretty good to me. I've also found a cat back system that has single tips that might be what you're referring too. And if we are thinking of the same type of tips, I agree with you. They're not the most attractive and look like they belong on a truck(to me at least). I still can't believe they dual tips are so much more expensive than their other cat back.
