Default Locking drivetrain when installing underdrive pulley

If I'm installing an UD pulley on my ls1 firebird, is it still necessary to use a flywheel locker if it's a manual? I have fhe front on jack stands and the rear wheels on the ground. I'm worried that even if my e brake is on and the transmission is in gear, the torque (250 ft lbs) necessary for the new pulley will roll the car off the stands. Probably a stupid question but better safe than sorry.

I look at it this way, You know the right tool will be safe (at least not the cause) It may take a longer to drop the starter and install the flywheel locker but you won't be crushed if the wheels turn while the car is in the air. If you're really set on doing it then at least place something else under the car so that it won't land on you if the jack stands fail. 6th gear with the parking brake on should hold it.

I trick I learned from maybe this forum.......
And......I have a good memory, I can not remember anything that I have ever forgotten.
Is to put a chain through the gaps in the pulley then around the tie-rod bar, bolt the chain together.
That should hold for a good torque reading.
If there a gap in the pulley for the chain.

I'd put it in 6th and crank on the e brake. Or you could have some press on the brake pedal when torquing the bolt.

Yes put it in 6th and if you need to brake but 6th worked when installing my 25% ud powerbond pulley on my old 98 z28. I needed the space to fit a 12an bung on the front cover. I dont think mine moved and was maybe on the ground i removed it from the top. The arp bolt i got said 235ftlbs. I had to borrow a 250ftlbs torque wrench from oreillys.

put a spare wheel or two under the car when you are being reckless so if it falls it won't crush you

A flywheel locker is a handy tool because it works with the engine in or out of the car. It's also very rigid and helps transfer all the torque to the bolt. If you use the drivetrain it acts like a spring and some of the torque goes into that motion instead of tightening the bolt.
