Default Coil on Plug setups

Question for the audience. I am facing the same old LQ4 dilemma that many have faced over the years. Built a sweet 6.0, and trying to relocate the hideous coils, but where? Has anyone ever seen a direct Coil on Plug setup? This would move the coils atop the plugs and keep those valve covers looking clean. Thanks.

Would coil-on-plug would put the coils too close to the exhaust manifolds/headers? Seems like the coils would get roasted coil-on-plug on an LS.

I've seen the coils relocated etc and coil covers like these.



FWIW - I used to really dislike the coils on the valve covers back in ~1999 but have changed mymind over the years. A valve cover in a contrast color like red or orange etc looks pretty good with a black coil pack on top these days to me. It's not as clean and elegant as hidden coils but more pleasing to the eye in my opinion than the stock aluminum valve cover with mounting bracket and black coils etc. The mounting bracket in my opinion is what's really ugly with the stock set up. It adds clutter and lots of ugly fastners.

An early decision in the build was made to use the "Chevrolet" embossed valve covers with the coil bracket mounting provisions deleted. We would just figure it out later. Now later is here, and there not any slick places to hide coils on a '72 C10. I could always go back to the original configuration, but wanted to test the waters first. I guess the biggest questions are going to be related to heat (Good point Black Bird), specifications to match the OEM electrical requirements, and the plug style. There's no point in reinventing the wheel if someone has already been down this path.

The embossed CHEVROLET looks good and definitely understand why that needs to be visible and uncluttered.

If you have LS3 coils & and LS3 coil pack harness, something like this might be possible. Unfortunately, the wires go over the valve covers.Ebay LS3 coil relocation coil kit




Another possible solution would be to mount the coils on end of cylinder head maybe like this, ideally on backside of head facing firewall.

Good suggestion on the Proform setup, but you need the Proform covers with the attachment points to mount their bracket to.

No one seen a direct COP setup out there?

For the coil on plug setup, it wouldn’t have any support out in the open air….the coil would just hang out there. If anyone would know about this, Lance would. He has more patents on stuff than anyone else I know, and designs LS coils that give a performance advantage. He could give you the ones and outs about this setup. Give Lance a call. He owns a company called Pantera EFI. His number is 949-250-1797.

A car buddy of mine with a 71 Nova with a 6.0 swap bought the spark plug wire and coil wire extensions from? and relocated them to the glove box. Search Roger Kunkel 71 Nova. Featured in Car Craft mag.
