Lightbulb Anyone ever tried this. FINALLY GOT SOUND CLIP!!!

OK I bought a magnaflow muffler stainless talked to the guy at magnaflow and he said that the mufflers they sell by themselves are the same as the ones on the catbacks. So I did some research on their site and the muffler size for the v8 is 5x8x18 24" overall length some 26"overall length, and the ones for the V6 are 5x8x14 20" over all length,(THE SMALLER THE MUFFLER THE LOUDER!), my guess is they put the smaller one on the v6 to make it sound a little more aggressive. So I decide to buy v6 muffler for my V8. As you can see thats a pretty big size difference. Man is it loud and sounds great. I figured why buy the complete cat back if you can do something like this besides the mid pipe size stock is 2.75 most catbacks are 3" probably not that much of a diff. in performance only being a 1/4" so I just put a 3" to 2.75 reducer in the inlet of muffler and went w/it. My test pipes should be here in a couple of days I will be bolting these to my custom y-pipe w/magnaflow collector can't wait to here this. Oh yeah I also have 20" long 4'' tips w/rolled edge also makes a difference in sound.

That's some pretty good thinking on that. I haven't tried, but it's definitely something that is probably fairly unique to your setup.

Keep us posted. I'm thinking about buying a magnaflow muffler for my car. Do you have headers?

Here is the sound clip of the custom magnaflow set up. Sorry it took so long to get around to taking it. She is running really rich so don't mind the FIREBALLS and POPPING. You have to right click and save as.Custom exhaust

I forgot to mention that I had slowmaster on before, Newbie mistake, I had it on for three years and when I went with the magnaflow I noticed a seat of SOTP difference.
It could be in my head but flowmasters are really restrictive and definately not the masters of flow, they actually take away from your cars performance at least there cross flow design does.

Yeah, that's what I did 2 years ago. My Z was new and I didn't see the sense in ripping out my brand new exhaust for a cat-back. I bought the Magnaflow muffler and ,as you did, used a 3.00 to 2.75 reducer. I also replaced the tailpipes with 2.5 inch (and of course new tips).

Cool, glad to see someone else tried it. You did use the smaller muffler 5x8x14 instead of the 5x8x18?

I went with the 'normal' size- I was looking for a quiet(er) muffler with good flow. It's a great muffler.

Whats up man, go to magnaflow's website and click on dealers then got to the dealer called justmagnaflow. I got the all stainless polished one for less than 100.00 bucks shipped. BTW you will also need a u-bend or j-bend with a close centerline radius to bring the pipe around for the passenger side tail pipe. I got mine off e-bay cheap. A good mandrel bender should be able to bend you one.

Also the guy from magnaflow told me that the mufflers they sell individualy are the exact same as the ones with the catback. That is if you go with the stainless one but even the aluminumized ones are the exact same internals, which is what counts the most anyways but the shell is of course aluminumized steel and corodes eventually.
