Default Cleaning oil gunk from intake manifold

My plastic manifold is caked with a thick tar-like oil substance and it is currently off the engine while I am replacing the cam sensor and oil pressure switch.

So I was thinking of:

1. Spraying top engine cleaner into the manifold ports and cleaning them out with paper towels or rags

2. Putting the whole manifold into a bath tub filled with hot soapie water

3. Spraying the open ports with break cleaner and getting as much gunk out as possible with paper towels or rags.

Question:

So which is the best method; or should I just leave the oil gunk in place and not worry?

Perhaps I should just swap back to the LS1 manifold which is not caked with oil-like sludge?

When I got my LS6 intake, I bought a bottle of concentrated dawn dish washing soap and dumped half the bottle into a tub of hot water. I just submerged the entire intake in there for about 24 hours, and it came out pretty clean. Just be sure to let it completely dry before re-installing it. Wouldn't want to start the engine with some water in the intake.

When I switched to the LS6 intake, I wanted to clean the old LS1 intake before storing it. There was quite a bit of oil build -up. I did like Krab did with the dishwashing soap ( I think it was Palmolive heavy duty or something) and soaked it overnight. Then I did the inside with one of those brushes used to clean tall glasses. ( like a 10" wire handle with a round brush at the end) Worked well and the manifold is like new.

I used GM Topend Cleaner... Intake was as clean as a whistle afterwards.

OK Great.

On the back of the intake manifold there is an electronic sensor that I believe is connected to the brake vacuume line. I assume it is a vaccume sensor.

Questions: Will the soapie water hurt the vacuume sensor. I assume the GM Top Cleaner is OK on this point... Did anyone deal with the oil-gunk caked on the intake ports of the heads? How?

Thanks....

That is the MAP sensor. Be careful with it. If you're cleaning the intake off the car, remove the sensor first.

BTW - I sprayed engine cleaner in mine, then shot high pressure water (hose nozzle) in there to clean it. Worked great.

Put the intake in a plastic garbage can, not the tub.

Is there a trick to removing the MAP sensor from the back of the plastic intake? Is it just pressed in there and held with an o-ring?
