Default MAC Header questions for my 2000 Z28

Hey guys, Im thinking about putting some MAC midlengths on my 00 Z28...The package will include the headers, highflow cats in the Ypipe and a 3 1/2in electric cutout after the Ypipe. I have SLP loudmouth on it already and just want to hear some of yalls opinions on it. How it sounds, performance issues, reliability and durability, *any other suggested headers or set ups*, overall too. Im planning on putting a SLP Cold Air package to help out the breathing in the near future. Thanks for everyones help.

You'll probably develop a decent amount of rasp soundwise with the LM still on there. What is making you choose mid-length over long tubes? Depending on where you live, you should probably go with longtubes for the maximum gains unless you have a legitimate reason to go with the mid-length. Scope JRP's exhuast guide too, it should cover pretty much any questions you have.

as stated, check the sticky .

you'll need to !egr and air or else spend another 100+ bucks for the 98-99 air/egr setup. mac doesnt make 2k headers.

I have the Mac's with catted Y-pipe on a 2000 also. It is a good set-up and I am happy with it, but if had to do over again would have gone with long tubes. Unless you are in Cali, go for long tubes.

Thanks for yalls replies...I was told at my local performance shop that getting Pacesetters and putting highflow cats on a hooker Y pipe (they say the Ypipe that comes with the pacesetter sucks and has clearance issues) that it would be too low for my car. I want cats on the car to be smog legal at least for now. I also want to put cutouts somewhere on my car I first wanted to put it before the cats, but the mechanic said that the engine needs back pressure so I dont lose all my low end...They recommended putting it after the Y pipe. If you have a better place for them to be put please reply with some recommendations. What muffler would yall recommend to switch out to give it a deep low tone not the rasp something within a cheap price range. Thanks all of yall for your help

I put a Mac mid length header set that included cats and a Y pipe on my T/A. I went with these headers because my car is lowered, I didn't want clearance issues. I have the SLP LM exhaust as well and I like it. I followed my wife while she was driving the T/A and it sounds mean and angry.

I gained 12 RWHP with no tune and my torque curve went crazy @ 2500 RPMs. My wife even noticed the difference in throttle response. I'm happy with the new headers, it's a hell of a change from running stock exhaust manifolds.

I'm not sure why you would want a cutout, this setup with the LM flows very well. If you want to change the sound you could go with a Dynomax bullet racing muffler in the I pipe.

Good luck.

Thanks Fast Eddie, how would the bullet muffler change the tone...im looking for a deep low tone unlike the rasp. Im mainly going with the cutouts to bypass the resonator and produce the sound straight from the engine.

Also Fast Eddie how long have you had your headers? Did you get them coated or do you reccomend getting that done to them?

Phil8616,
I've had the headers on for a month now. I ordered the silver coated because I've been told they won't rust and will always look silver with no discoloring.

The dynomax bullet muffler is a popular replacement for the LM resonator. It's suppose to help with the rasp, I've never heard one with the dynomax installed so I can't say for sure. It's hard to get a deep old school sound out of an LS1. Some people do true duels with the GMMG to get more of an old muscle car sound.

I like to keep things simple so I guess you could say I'm happy with my setup.

Boy can I answer this one... I had MACs on my 2000 Z28 with my factory cats welded into a Y-pipe and the SLP LM. Sounded mean as hell, but did have some rasp and popping. I spent $50 to buy the AIR/EGR stuff from a boardmember (great guy to deal with), but should have just eliminated both from the get-go. The MACs are a great header with easy install, good quality, no clearance issues and good power. For some extra HP, clean up the welds and get rid of the ball-fitting with a Flowmaster collector. You can find used MACs cheap and I sold mine for under $300. In retrospect, I prolly should've just kept them...
