I clean mine once a year. Too much oil will jack up the MAF signal. The excess oil will coat the wires on the MAF and not signal the PCM right.

The way I avoid over oiling is to:
1. Clean the filter per instructions.
2. Wash it out well.
3. Before it is fully dry (Just damp) Oil it. As the water dries it will spread the oil out. It will kind of wick the oil into the gauze as it dries.

I have not had a problem doing it this way and have never over oiled a filter.

I oil it till it's a nice shade of purple, kinda hard to get it right I know, but you can't hurt anything by putting a little too much oil on it, whatever seems right.

I use a very similar method except that I let it dry completely before oiling it.
When I oil it I use fast strokes across the filter with a thin coat of oil (one side of the filter only of course), let it sit (it will spread or 'wick' this way as well) and then touch up the still white unoiled spots afterwards. I then wrap it in a paper towel and let it sit overnight.
I've never had a MAF problem either.

Well, except for the potential of excess oil getting onto the MAF.

Depends on where you live and where you drive...K&N says every 50k (or is 25k?) miles I think but I would do it more often, say every 10k - 15k depending on how dirty the filter looks.

If your filter looks brown it,s dirty. I clean mine not on milage or time but by color.
