Default Coolant Temp Reading

OK, I know this question has been asked numerous times because I found them when "Searching", what is never revealed is what the final fixes were. I just recently completed numerous mods on my car and when I started it the first time, the fans came on immediately and the temp stayed at 0. I had forgotten to reinstall the connector to the sending unit on the front of the drivers side head. After doing this the temp gauge worked and the fans stayed off for about 30 seconds and then crapped out again. I reseated the connector again after squirting it with WD40 and it did the same thing again. As far as I can tell the connector, wiring, and sending unit are fine. What are some of the conclusions others have found for this same problem. I find it hard to believe the sender went bad just sitting in the garage for 2 weeks. I did have the intake off, but did not remove the heads or any grounds that I was aware of. Help!!!

Come on guys, what did you find was causing this problem in the past. I guess I will start with the obvious and replace the sensor and see if that fixes anything. It has been suggested that it might be a ground problem, pin problem, broken wire problem, etc. I am just trying to find out what the actual causes have been so I can start there. If it helps, I just completed a K-member swap, LS6 intake swap, headers, and a clutch and tranny rebuild. The heads were not removed, the sensor is not damaged visibly, and no ground wires were removed that I can remember.

I did, but am going to try it one last time before going and getting a new sensor.
