Default air conditioning compressor probs

my air conditioning compressor clutch is making noise when it is spinning disengaged it sounds like metal grinding and there are some fine shavings around the pulley/clutch if you engage the air it stops making the noise. My question is can i take the clutch/pulley assembly off the pump and repair it or do I have to get a whole new compressor and can I do it while it is on the car. It looks like there is a bolt in the center of the pulley like to remove it if anyone can help I would appreciat it. I took the belt off today so it doesnt run for now.

thanks jason

I believe that you can just replace the clutch assembly. You don't have to replace the entire compressor.

You can also get the shims pull the drive hub off & try to shim it out some. This is the cheap fix. If the compressor main shaft is screwed & allowing the hub to engage the pulley it will not work for long. This is the case often. I try to shim 'em first. If the compressor is making noise engaged might as well replace it though. It's a judgement call.

You can replace the hub bearing field coil and drive plate separately. You have to have a hub remover and installer to do this procedure. The air gap on the clutch is set by how far the drive plate is pressed on with the hub installer. Fords with the fx-10 and 15 compressors are the only ones that use shims between the drive plate and crank to set the air gap for the drive plate. Shop around though bc from a dealer these pieces add up to within about 100.00 of the cost of a new compressor with a warranty. IT is also recommended to change all of the above parts as a complete assembly.

You can install shims on frigidaire/delphi compressors, there out there. There are more compressors out there with shims than the FX series.
