Default engine removal for dumbies

Hey, i was wondering if this has been done before.

How about a sticky for engine removal. Not only listing the different methods but informing on the typical or nontypical rookie mistakes made when dropping/installing a motor.

so wat do ya'll think? Anyone want to get started?

(this came up because im gonna drop the motor on Wednesday and needed some further info, just for a safe on mind)

Heres one: Not researching or using the search button at your vehicle specific forum.

anyone else?

I pull motors from the bottom. You need to take off the intake and all the accessories. Pull all the grounds off. Remove the front tires. I disconnect all the electircal plugs including the o2 and tranny connections and lay the wiring harness off to the side. Disconnect the two front brake lines, and pull the sway bar out. Jack the front end up about three feet and support the body with suv jack stands. Take off the four bolts that connect the tranny brace. Put a small jack under the tranny. While still supporting the motor with a good jack under the oil pan undo the six bolts that connect the k member to the body. I have thee people to lower it down. One person on each jack and one person to balance everything holding onto a brake caliper. Obviously you need to pull the drive shaft and exhaust before dropping everything. That is the short of it. You can drop the whole assembly and pull it out the side on the jacks. Just take your time and make sure everything is disconnected and clear while dropping the motor down. Good luck.

Err... You don't have to take off the intake or accessories if you have a cherry picker. Use the engine hoist to lift the CHASSIS away from the k-member (as it sits on a cart or jack).

thanks for the info. This is will be my first and i wanted to make sure everything was covered.

Also, i felt that even though there are some good threads on this, a sticky might be a good idea so others that are looking for it might find it in one shot, not by searching buttoning the the site to death.

THanks again for the info, however, do you have anything that you might add along the lines of rookie mistakes or things to watchout for?

anyone else?

If you've never done it before, try and find a friend who has to help you, makes it alot easier.

Nothing in particular that I can think of. Every car is a little different with exhaust and suspension so it is hard to say what you will run into. Just take your time so you don't break a bunch of sensors. If you have a friend that has some wrenching experience that would be good too.

They just did a step by step on Horsepower TV this weekend. They used this book for some tips and tricks that they said would save time and headaches.

Ya and it only took the guys on Horsepower TV about 15 min to pull the engine. and they never got dirty hands

it went something like this...

step 1. disconnect all wires and hoses (5 min)
step 2. go to commercial (5 min)
step 3. remove drive shaft, and k-member (4 min)
step 4. lift car off engine (1 min)

then they went to hot parts and did a bunch of bad puns. lol!
I love that show

We pulled my buddies engine and tranny out through the top, just removed the wires took off the intake and accessories put front of the car on jack stands, used a engine hoist and pulled it out. really pretty easy job I thought and that was the first time we pulled an engine!!!

They lifted the car off of the engine/transmission/whole front suspension (with tires) and rolled it away within 10 minutes.
