Default Different 160 stats???

I was on Ebay just checking out some thermostats. Is there that much of a difference between a Moto Rad 160 stat (19.00) and a Hypertech stat (49.00)????

Probably not, but the Hypertech comes with a housing which is why it's expensive.

Just rember that you have to change you programing if swaping in a stat lower that 180F. Other wise you computer will stay in open loop mode and you will lose power and fail emissions.

As long as it is LS1 Specific, it should work. LS1 Thermostat's include the housing and they are not like Gen II Motors. That is why they are $$$. I changed mine to a Hypertech 160* and it works like a champ. BTW, the car goes into closed loop at 92* and the thermostat will not affect it. The reason you need tuning is to lower the fan temps to get the benefits of the thermostat at low speeds. You can modify your existing thermostat to open earlier for a lot cheaper.

A 160 t-stat is plenty cool for an LS1 because of the aluminum block and heads and improved water jacket design. 180-200 is where LS1's tend to dyno the highest, at least that's what GM High Tech and other mags have reported. Now for a Gen 1 sb with iron heads, modifying the t-stat to open at 130, 140 is beneficial.

Want to know a little secret? The Hypertech IS a Moto Rad in a Hypertech box. All of Hypertech's t-stats are just your normal over the counter 160 or 180 stats that you can get at any parts store. They just buy them, box them, and charge a lot more.

I'll even go one step further... CST # 37960

FWIW, the stock stat opens at 187.
