I come from the truck scene but everything i used to read was lower temp means a bit cooler air, so more to compress in turn maybe adding a few hp, but gas doesn't burn off as efficient and u get more carbon build up than usual. There was a guy that did a test running cooler it wasn't with a stat though and 20 degrees cooler he made around 12 more hp this is on a GM 4.3 liter. Just wondering if you guys know at what temp does oil get its thickest does it vary a lot by brand?

Just as a point of referance.....a 160 stat will easily put an LS1 in the 170-172 range when cruising in cool weather.

Exactly. That is my concern about running down in the 170 range (with a 160 stat). Granted, motors with metal/aluminum intakes certainly seem to gain from cooler underhood temps more due to heat soak issues, but I just never saw any performance gain from running any lower than mid-190 range on a stock LS1 motor with a stock or close to stock timing curve.

I guess everyone has to form their own opinion.
