A few exhaust system questions
My car has been backfiring through the exhaust for a couple of months now. It seems to have started unprovoked. I get backfires at any time, cold AND warm, when shifting, and especially when downshifting (very loud with the latter.) I've looked for leaks, but can't find anything obvious. Anyway, here are my questions:
-In order for the backfires to happen, would an air leak have to be ahead of or after the catalytic converters?
-Could the check valves in the AIR system be bad, allowing fresh air to enter the manifolds? Please note, the system is stock with the exception of a Hooker cat-back. Check sig for other mods.
-Where are the check valves?
-For those with higher technical expertise....can a 160*F t-stat cause the backfires due to possible lower temperatures? I've had the t-stat since new and never had a problem.
-I've heard removal of the AIR system will throw a code. Will it affect performance, driveability, and/or gas mileage?
My car also seems to be running rich, as per my last oil analysis. There was 1.8% fuel in the oil. I assume a leak before the O2 sensors could trick the computer into seeing a lean condition, richening the mixture?!?!?
Thanks for any and all help.
