Default Borla muffler ? for LTs, OR/Y....

I have LTs, ORY and a borla catback. Also have a magic stick cam. I have no plates in the Borla currently. The car sounds AWESOME at idle and WOT but everywhere else inbetween, its sounds like total ****. If I use any of the other plates with a hole, it has the horrible rasp. BUT If I used the complete block off plate forcing all exhaust through the muffler, it sounds really clean with no rasp BUT its entirely too quiet and idle and low speeds, can't even hear it at idle other then the header noise. My question is, is there a muffler I can put inplace of the borla that will have a good, moderately loud tone that I can close the cut out and run the exhaust through the muffler without too much HP loss and not be quiet?

I know some guys are using a XR1 muffler in the I pipe and running the exhaust through the cut out but my car is lowered and the XR1 will not fit under the floor pan.. What about the XR1 in place of the regular borla muffler? Would it be the same thing? way too quiet? I really like the borla setup and look but its just too quiet going through the muffler and too raspy going through the cutout, ,even with the smallest hole plate.. What are you guys doing for this besides switching to true duals or another catback?

Thanks in advance

Damn it seems everyone with a borla and OR/y has had this same problem. I like the way it sounds when accelerating through town and WOT with the cut out blocked and the exhaust going through the muffler but I like the idle with the cutout open. Cutout closed the car sounds like a stock TA with 2 or 3 spark plug wires off. I was thinking maybe the hooker aerochamber in the borla but it seems that after doing a search, that muffler is quiet to.

Guys remember the old 5.0 mustangs with 2 chamber flowmasters, off road and going through full tail pipes, those cars sounded AWESOME all the way through the powerband and idle, why can't we get our F-body's to do the same..??

Even LS1 vettes with off road X pipes and corsa or borla catbacks sound 10x better then F-bodys when idling or accelerating at half throttle. WTF?

i know sound is great, but when you start doing performance mods you are doing them for performance, right. if the cops weren't messing with me, don't worry about the sound as long as it performs good.

Vortec is complaining about his Borla sounding crappy. The "crappy" raspy sound comes from no cats. I have the cats in my FLP ypipe. Although there are cats, they flow extremely well. I wouldn't mind the 5hp you may lose from the cats verusus living with the "crappy" raspy sound. Moral of the story is, my car is LOUD, it sounds GREAT, and I recommend everyone with Borla and LT's to run cats. I also had my ypipe welded to the tailpipes. The band clamps kept getting caught and falling off being my car is lowered. That also helped some of the raspy sound.

Hope this helps.

What do the 2 cars you mentioned have in common - they are both true duals. That is the key - unfortunately it is not easy to do on a Trans Am - TD dumps sound good.....outside the car - too much drone inside. The best solution is TDs taken over or under the axle and out the back. That is big money though!

I like the way my setup sounds everywhere EXCEPT in the 2200-2600 range at say 15-40% throttle...Like briskly accelerating through town. If you drive under an overpass you would swear a shot gun went off. The overall tone and choppy sound is great, its just the raspy, glass pack noise I can't stand. Running the exhaust through the muffler COMPLETELY removes the rasp and raunch but its just too quiet at idle for me. For the $4k I spent in bolt ons and cam, I want to hear the bitch lope. Is it the Y-pipe that is causing the rasp? If I somehow can shoe horn a bullet or XR1 in the I pipe, will it kill the rasp and keep most of the great sound or would it just be quiet like running it through the borla catback muffler? **** pisses me off.

I know true duals with some good mufflers would probably fix the problem but honestly, I like the way the borla looks, fits and its power potential with the open plate in the cutout.

Now I am like short shifting and throttling easy before and through that rpm range which sucks, not to mention to get to the good sound at 3500 and up, you gotta run it through the "glass pack" stage first. I guess there is no easy solution to this problem or you guys would have already done it. Not sure about running cats, I use race gas when spraying and that can't be good for cats, also cats are $$
