Default Questions on FRA inside

I just did the FRA and then was reading a post on here where a guy said it is bad cuz water can get in...which can seize it up.

Any truth to this?

Another Q. Is the FRA the same as what comes stock on an SS or WS6 and does it look the same?

The only negative thing I have ever heard about the FRA is that your air filter gets dirtier quicker but, what would you expect with more air going inot the engine?

Should I even worry about getting a CAI from SLP after doing the free mod?

A lot of people think the CAI is not necessary. I have one, but don' t really use it. One would think it makes since, but, being the summer time, I don' t really race the car much, I would rather not worry about blocking off a lot of the front of the radiator, than gain a few horse. Just my .02.

Okay, I'm gonna give you my $.02. Flame away if you wish.

When you go modifying a car from its stock configuration, there are always compromises. While this mod may not cost you anything, you are giving something up.

The plastic pieces that were put there from the factory are there for a reason. I don't care what anyone says, I don't think they were put there to make the F-bodies slower than the Corvettes. They were put there to deflect water that could potentially get up in there.

You CAN say "Man, that'd take a lot of water." Yeah? Well I must have found the magic amount, because my filter got soaked one Friday driving in a ridiculous amount of rain. There was about 3" of standing water I had no choice but to go through, and that's all it took. I was even going slow as hell. Damn near locked my engine. Thankfully it didn't.

Do this mod if you wish. It is good for some extra power. How much? No one really knows. Kinda falls into that "every little bit helps category." If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't have done it. After I did this mod, I felt no gain whatsoever. Others may disagree, and that is fine.

When you mod your car, you are taking a risk. As long as you are aware of this, then by all means, start hacking away. Don't say I didn't warn you though.

I did the FRA mod a while back, like was said already, expect a very dirty filter very fast! Outside of that, no problems here.

I'm not flaming, just giving my personal experience: I drive my car 300+ miles per week, every week. I did the FRA mod (and all the other free mods too) almost 2 years ago and have had zero problems.

And I'm not saying that you ever will...I am just stating that I did. This is my daily driver, and it sees 250-300 per week as well. Living in Florida, you find out real fast that the water really doesn't have much of a place to go around here. I almost found out the hard way.

I just posted that because there are some people in this world who fail to realize that you are taking a risk doing even the smallest mod (like this) to your car.

You do have a good point that people should take into consideration. I think I know quite a bit about cars, but I'm certainly not a GM engineer.

Thats why I don't drive through pools of water with my car. That small puddle he drove through must have been a couple feet deep. I don't have any trouble avoiding puddles this deep.

I've had the FRA for about 11 months now and have had zero problems with water. I live in a state (Ga.) that gets its fair share of rain. I have driven through deep puddles with no problems. I think you have drive through a couple of feet of water to get it to flow through your filter and into the engine. Even then, the filter is designed to only let air through. Water is alot thicker than air, it would really have to be sucked through there to get into your engine esp. with a K&N type filter. Maybe others experienced a fuke, one-in-a-million situation where the conditions were perfect for that to happen, I don't know. Its just seems very unlikely to me. However, the air filter gets dirty as hell right away. I had to clean mine after about 7,000 miles. I mean, I was tapping it and clods of dirt were falling off. Mind you, this is only on the section of the filter that is exposed to the underneath of the car. But still, you need to clean it regularly. I've installed some screen door material under the filter in hopes of reducing the amount of dirt that gets stuck on the filter. We'll see how that goes. If I had to do it again, I probably wouldn't do the FRA, just since the performance gains are so small and I have a new thing to worry about now (dirt-filled air filter).

I did the FRA, and went one step further, I did the cold air mod. The cost was free for me because i had extra hose but it shouldnt be more than $10 at a local parts store.
