You couldnt reverse the polarity because its not a motor, meaning it dosent use electrcity is gets its power from the engine. What are you trying to acomplish?

Dosent it run off a belt? Maybe I am confused, but I thought the reason it had a belt coming off the engine to it was to spin it?

Found a link for you btw https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...light=air+pump
NOw that I think about it does have power going to it so I it must be a "motor".

Well searched and I was wrong, anyway learn something everyday.

Its electric... I can go out to the garage and take a picture of it for you sitting in my cabinet of spare parts. No belts attached... origionally mounted behind the driver headlight under the chassis above the plastic splash sheild. Not in the engine bay really.

EDIT: guess i had the thread open too long.. didnt see that you found it was electric

I don't see what it would do by running in reverse. You'd be blowing hot exhaust into your lid.

The AIR pump is also a centrifugal pump so it would not blow air in the reverse if you just reverse the leads.

exactly, hook it up to the catch can instead of hveing it routed through the tb. i mean ****, its already hidden. hook up a manual switch and somehow reverse the motor to suck, not blow.

I think any oil laden vapors would destroy the thing in short order. It wasn't intended to do anything but push a little extra air at certain times during warmup. Sucking oily crankcase vapors would kill it.

you dont have to reverse the polarity...the hose that goes to your air lid can just be removed...and hooked up to the crank case

I think the dude above was getting confused with the Air Conditioning compressor, which of course is driven off a short belt from the crank pulley. The AIR pump mentioned above is different, its the smog pump that blows extra air into the exhaust manifolds / header during startup to help the cats light off faster. Like it was said, it is a centrifugal blower and will not suck air if the leads were reversed.

has anyone ever done this though?

I know crankcase pressure is not a good thing but isnt the main idea to move crancase vapors, what about putting a breather on every possible valve cover spot and hooking the AIR pump to pump clean air into the crancase? I dont know how much pressure it would cause but it should do a good job of cycling the vapors. Now the problem would be the continous pump life

I would use this Idea with a throttle position sensor connected to votage level comparator circuit that then drives a relay that then turns on the air pump at a setpoint of ¾ throttle. Or maybe see if the air pump can be turned on at certain times with programming software, That way It's not running constantly..

I just wasnt thinking, I cut my teeth on my IROC, the AIR pump on that was driven off a belt, which I spent alot more time underneath than my Formula. Just wasnt thinkin.
