Default adjustable catback

Sorry guys I don't know too much about exhaust so forgive me for asking a stupid question but when you have borla's adjustable catback what functionally are you adjusting (ie more/less air flow, etc) and how is it adjusted?

Never personally seen the kit, but I know it comes with some plates that restrict sound (aka airflow).

Borla system uses plates that restrict the flow to one side of the exhaust.

so do you lose performance by having it adjusted to restrict the flow this way?
And also, is there any way to electrically control this plate rather than manually?

It would seem that you would lose some performance by using a more restrictive plate. I doubt it is much at all though. I'm sure there is somebody here that has some dyno tests done with this. In my opinion, the Borla is way overpriced and there are better sounding systems for almost half the price. I love my Hooker Cat-Back, and with an electronic cut-out, you can go from mild to wild in a matter of seconds.

for the Borla cat-back, the bigger the plate the more top-end power you have, whereas the smaller the more low-end you have. There's a McCord PowerPlate you can get for the adjustable cat-back that allows you to control it from inside your car.

my borla sounds and runs great wide open (no plate at all). if you want to, you can take off the passenger side tip (the part that the plate fits between), and put a qtec on their. if you do it right, it will look like you have a single outlet exhaust. then you can adjust the borla when ever you want.

I have a Borla, and love it. Yes, it is expensive, but no less resonable, IMHO, than any other SS exhaust. I have a QTEC in mine, and it' s great. The only thing I would change is when I need more flow, maybe replace the 3" I-Pipe, with another 4" SS pipe. As far as what you are adjusting, like others say, flow, and sound. You aren' t changing the sound too much, unless you cap it completely. When I had my MACs, and a O/R pipe, it would rasp really bad, around 2200 - 3000 RPMs. The Borla comes with four ( if I remember right ) plates, with sizes from 2.75" , to a solid plate. Unless I got down to the smallest opening, I would have a lot of rasp. What I am saying is, I think it would control more flow, that noise. FWIW, do NOT try to pass a noise inspection with this catback. I just failed an inspection with nothing more than this catback, and I was up to 7 db higher than the limit, and not lower than 4 above.
