Default Argument at work: Too much plug gap?

I was helping a guy out at work who just changed his plugs but forgot to gap them. He says his car turns over but doesnt start the first try, it takes him 2-3 tries to start his car. I said maybe the gap is too big, some people at work seem to think it has nothing to do with the ignition sys.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Tell them they are full of ****.

Call an autoparts store and ask for the gap for the particular vehicle you are working on. Then tell the guy that he needs to gap them to specs.

Thats what I thought. The bad thing is that he changed his plugs on a LS1 Camaro, so he pretty pissed about it. He has the AC Delco iridium plugs and a guy at GM told him they were pre gapped so he didnt even check the gap.

It must be that time of the season. I just changed my plugs today. I swapped NGK's for those same Delco iridiums. There's a bunch of stuff floating around about those Delco plugs. I came upon a service bulletin of some sort warning against adjusting the gap on em, said they should all come gapped at 40 and if they're not, take it back. They dont look too fragile, not sure why they're not supposed to be adjusted but I just checked em all to be about 40 and put em in. I didnt have any trouble with the NGK's a few of em were under gapped so i just opened them up to 55 as was suggested on this forum. Anyway, we'll see what happens when I turn the key tomorrow. Good luck with your co-workers.

Let me know how it goes for you with the plug gap being that small, cuz I'm gonna help him with his plugs and I would hate to do all that work and the plugs were gapped properly all along!

I'm waiting on 2 AIR flange bolts before I can start it up. The parts counter said they'd be here today, but they weren't. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to you tomorrow.

ok, just went for a 30 minute drive. AC Delco iridium plugs. They were gapped at .040 out of the box, give or take .002 and as per the service bulletin I found, I just left them alone and installed them.

I felt little to no difference in engine performance on my drive, and keep in mind I went from long tube headers and NGK plugs to stock manifolds, cats and Delco plugs.

So unless your friend got a bad set or something, I dont think its his plugs.

Yea its a stop crank, stop crank. But last night I took out all the plugs to check the gap and the plugs were gapped anywhere from 0.10 to .024 and there was actually 2 of them that were gapped at.040. I gapped them all at .040 and shes been starting eveytime now, but I am gonna go ahead and change out the fuel filter for him when he does his next SLOF.

make sure the ECT sensor wiring is connected.

I have forgot to reconnect this sensor, and the car does a similar hard start.

Engine Coolant Temp sensor.

It is located at the front of the drivers side head, and is easily broken, or disconnected during a plug swap.

I gapped all my AC Delco Iridiums to the factory .060 spec. The box they came in said to gap to specific application. I also left my ECT disconnected. The tipoff was when I fired it up and the engine was cold. The temp gauge read ~150.

I installed AC Delco iridium plugs gapped at 0.042. No problems here.
