Default coolant wont fill?

ok so on my quest to replace my thermostat, i drained out all the old coolant and installed my new thermostat. now as i went to flush out the system with distilled water, i noticed that after only about a cup of water, the coolant reserve tank was already full. could there be a kink in a hose somewhere or was i supposed to do something i dont know about before filling up the tank? i tried starting the car and letting it warm up to open the thermostat but that didnt help, the fans turned on and the car continued to warm up and the water stayed at the top of the tank. i did open the pressure release valve as well. thanks in advance for any advice.
