No, it's not. Every cary is different and you will definately gain power with a tune and it is recommended, but you don't need it. If you can I'd go ahead and get it tuned, a lot of places will give you at least one retune for much less than the initial. Will you be getting more mods anytime soon? After a cam swap or power adder is when you NEED to get it tuned.

I just had my car tuned after installing headers. I picked up 13 rwhp with the tune. The main reason for tuning was to get fan temps lowered and to tune out the rear o2 sensors. I did notice the car was running really rich initially and was leaned out with the tuning.

Not all cars, some would benifit, but not all. If it is running a tad rich or something then try some maf ends or porting your maf, usually that can lean it out a bit by doing that.
don't mess with the MAF - the results are hit or miss. If you miss, you've just messed up a perfectly good MAF

I tuned a car for headers only, and it was 7-10% lean from a previous tune, so I'd say tune it every time you do anything on it. if you don't care for extra power, or are ok with blowing things up, i highly recommend investing your money elsewhere
My uncle is a mechanic. He says that people usually come in for a tune pretty much knowing what they want to be changed, but by the time they leave they have found another way to make some power, so there is always some type of way to make power with a good tune as long as any parts were added.

If you want to do it right, yes, you need a tune. Heck there's some calibration needed even if you just change your air filter. And I'm not talking about just tuning WOT tables. A real tune will make your car much happier. And you too.
