Default Y pipe question

I am going to be buying long tube headers soon. Do I need a y pipe if I am going to be running dual exhaust? I am planning on buying the headers and then taking my 98 A4 up to a Tuffy or Lentz to install a true dual exhaust system w/ no cats. Here in Michigan we don't need cats.

I am thinking that a y pipe is only needed with cats. Is that correct?

You dont need a Y pipe unless your running it into a catback. In your situation you will probably run a X or H pipe and then dump the exhaust or run it out the back.

Will a muffler shop like Lentz or Tuffy have X and H pipes in stock or is that a piece I need to buy with the headers as a package deal? Thanks.
