Default Putting An Air Filter In The Oil Cap

I Have Seen A Car With A Small Air Filter On The Oil Cap.what Does This Do? Or Was Is Such For The Look? Because I Got A Volant Intake And Their Was A Small Air Filter For The 2000 And Up Ls1 And My Doesnt Need It, And I Was Thinking Of Doing That.

That is just a breather filter. It isn't really needed for most cars. It just helps vent the crankcase of all the gases and I think it may help with burning oil.
