Kooks header owners... question
Kooks header owners... question I'm about to pull the trigger on a kooks header kit, but I have mixed emotions about which kit. If cash wasn't an option, I would get the kit with the cats and x-pipe, but cash is limited for this purchase, so this limits my options.
I can get a new kooks set up up with the lt headers and offroad kit, which I believe is just straight pipes and an x-pipe for an incredible deal. So before I buy, what exactly am I getting myself into?
What are the negatives and positives of getting the offroad kit instead of the high flo cat kit?
Advice needed asap! Looking to buy this afternoon!

I really like my Kooks... definately cant go wrong with that choice. As far as the offroad kit, it mainly depends on local emission laws. Without cats it will be hard to pass a sniffer test or something similar.
Other then that, no cats will be slightly louder, give slightly more power, and could cause a rasp in your exhaust (some do and some dont).

I love mine with the ORY. It took a few days to get used to, but I love it. Strange thing though, the rasp went away after about 500 miles. It only does it when the motor is cold now. You can always do the ORY first, and if its too loud switch to cats later.

if you have to pass smog you have no chance in passing without cats.
when i lived in california, i was soo worried about passing emisions so i went with cats. didnt stay around long enough to actually take the test......moved to texas, and have to pass the safety inspection. went to the shop, the inspector flipped my headlights up and passed me. world of difference

i went with cats.its very quiet until i gun it.
i wouldve went without cats if i knew i could get thru inspection but youre not losing much if you go with high flow cats.

I run the Kooks catted y-pipe. To see how restrictive my exhaust was, I recenlty dynoed my car with the catted y-pipe and a cutout. Made 472/420 rwhp/tq. Next I dropped the cats and y-pipe and went open headers with extensions (no cats) . My power only increased to 478/430 rwhp/tq. (same dyno, same day). That should show you how well the cats and y-pipe flow. The cats are probably only costing me 3-4 rwhp (at 470+ rwhp) with the y-pipe being worth the other 2-3 rwhp loss (compared to open headers with 24" extensions).
I chose the catted y-pipe for several reasons:
1> I hate smelling like gas.
2> I hate raspy exhuast drone.
3> It's much easier to add a piece of straight pipe in place of the cats than it is to add cats to an off-road y-pipe.

Thanks for the help. I'm not super concerned about smog tests. I have Alabama plates, so I don't think I have to test here in Denver.

If you do go with the catted setup, I don't think you'll be loosing much hp. They have a new magnaflow cat with a metallic element that supposedly flows 572 cfm. With two of them, that's more than ample cfm for a stock cubed motor.
