I recently put on some pacesetter long tubes with ory and hooker cat back on my 99. I got the hooker cat bak for $275 from tsp. I ditched my flowmaster cat back and got the hooker since it (supposedly) flows much better. I would say that the flowmaster sounded better than the hooker, but was noisier at idle & light throttle. I also didn't like the hooker tips...I thought that they looked kinda cheesy so I got some other oval ones welded on for more of a sleeper look.
I used the tsp ory...it took nearly as long to get the y pipe fitted up nicely as installing the headers themselves.
There is my .02

Get some LT's when you buy the Hooker catback. I run a FLP LT/ORY setup to a Hooker catback. It sounds AMAZING. I had the Borla (open) open on there but it was WAY too raspy for me. As stated above, it will be quiet with stock manifolds. Save for some LT's as well and do it all at once. Your ls1 will come to life. Full exhaust is a great investment.

Had a Hooker Cat-Back on my thirdgen with Hooker LT's and for normal driving it was great, light on the gas and I could hardly tell it was there. WOT sounded awesome too. I went with a Borla this time for the stainless and I like the tips alot on a 4thgen.

My hooker sounded great with stock manifolds and cats. After a cam, headers and high flow cats it was way too loud for me. I ended up with a dual/dual.
Also, it seemed louder as it aged.
Good luck

When I had my car stock first things that went in was the Hooker Catback, the sound was good but not really louder than stock at idle or cruising rpms as soon as you hit WOT you knew it was a lil louder. Since then I upgraded in steps, first gutted the cats and installed a free flowing Y-pipe, that made it very pleasant and still sounded good at idle, but it sounded like I had shorties. Now that I have hooker LTs and the Hooker Y and Catback it sounds like a real muscle car. At idle you can tell LTs are installed, its not bad even at cruising rpms, but when I hit WOT it sounds very very loud , by the way my cam makes idle a lil louder because of the lope. Hope that helps.
