Default power steering howling

ok so i just installed a umi strut tower bar cuz i was bored and wanted to install one of the many parts i need to install. anyway i took it to a spot i usually go to test out new mods. the car suprisingly did feel different... but thats not why im posting this. my power steering is howling right now, but it seems to get better after i wait a while after driving it hard. it will get really loud right after i drove it hard and im at a stop turning the wheels. now i dont think the strut tower bar could have done anything, so im wondering what you guys think about this. oh the car has 132000+ miles on it so is it normal for the power steering pumps to go out around now? do you think i would need to replace it?

Well, the PS system is not quite adequate on our cars if you use it hard (like autocross/road racing). The power steering is overboosted to make it easy for anyone to turn the wheels when the car is moving slow/standing still. The fluid gets too hot and the system can't dissipate the heat. That is likely your whining problem. Now, with you mileage you MAY have a pump going out, but I doubt it. If the pump was going out it should whine a little all the time, not just when you drive hard.

GM high tech this month just had an article on a company that has a better power steering pump. THe con is that its a little harder to turn at low speeds, but the fluid overheating pretty much stops. Hope that helps.

I would double check your fluid level sometimes depending on how low it might not howl all the time

Check the fluid first, then get a new pump if needed. You can get a "Turn One" pump, which is valved differently than stock; or do this the the fun way:
get a stock ps pump, and get an underdrive pulley

A UD pulley helps prevent the pump from killing itself at higher rpm
