How to ID an '01 LS1?
lack of an EGR... if there is a black tube coming from the passenger side to the top of the intake behind the throttle body.. then its an 00,99 or 98.
HOWEVER.. people have deleted and coverted to the newer LS6 intake manifold on older engines.. i guess you should also look for the plug to the EGR, if there is one and its not connected.. means some one swapped intakes and it was an 00,99, or 98 engine..

2001 is the first year with no EGR. they have the LS6 intake and I don't know the part number. The LS1 intake used on 1997-2000 is part number 12556333. If it's not that part number, it's probably a LS6 intake.
Heads are another good way. Look at the casting number on them. 2001 and up is 241. 00-99 is 853. 98-97 is also 853, but has perimiter valve cover bolts.

Do a search for LS1s with an LS6 block and find the casting # for the LS6 block (it starts with a 125xxxxxx). If it has that block its definitely an '01+. But only 10% '01s and 25% '02s got that block. So it could be a different block and still be '01+. The casting # will be on the rear of the block, just below the driver's side head.
Also check the head casting #, if it isn't 241 then its not an '01/'02. But I believe '00 also got that same head casting #.
Finally the EGR as mentioned is the easiest way to tell if it was there.
